Koshland Park Improvement Project is an umbrella term for two distinct projects that will be planned together and completed in sequence in 2026-2027 to improve efficiency and minimize construction-related disruptions to neighbors and other park-goers: Koshland Park Playground Renewal and Koshland Park Site Improvements and Community Garden Renovation .

Koshland Park Playground Renewal

Scope of Work

This project will fully renovate the playground in Koshland Park – It will replace all play equipment and playground surfacing within the existing playground footprint, complete minor fence and gate improvements, and ensure the playground is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Background

The project is a part of Rec and Park’s Playground Renewal Program , an initiative that leverages the City’s cooperative purchasing power to streamline the delivery of complete replacements of play equipment and play surfacing.

The program creates exciting and inclusive play spaces within the footprint of existing playgrounds, guided by focused community engagement.

Koshland Playground is Rec Park’s third Playground Renewal project. The first was Bernal Heights Playground Renewal , which was completed November 3, 2025. The second is Louis Sutter Upper Playground Renewal , which is scheduled to begin construction in Mid 2026.

Funding

Funding comes from the San Francisco Office on Disability and Accessibility (ODA).

Koshland Park Site Improvements and Community Garden Renovation

Scope of Wor k

The concept design for this project was approved by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission on October 16, 2025.

This project will remove barriers to accessibility throughout the park in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by creating clear access points, upgrading pathways, correcting slopes and grades, and providing clear paths of travel to park features, such as the drinking fountains, benches, and kiosks.

The project will renovate the community garden by creating a new accessible entry path with park tread paving, building new retaining walls, and making drainage improvements to support long-term site stability.

Raised community garden planters will be added to expand gardening opportunities, and a new wood deck with integrated seating will provide space for gathering and educational programming.

Background

The park’s circulation paths, slopes, and infrastructure must be updated to meet modern accessibility standards. The community garden renovation ensures the garden remains safe, inclusive, and resilient for future generations.

Funding

Funding comes from the General Fund from a dedicated program for ADA compliance, as well as philanthropic support from the Theodore and Frances Geballe Philanthropic Fund of the Jewish Federation Bay Area and an in-kind grant of design services from Trust for Public Land .
