240 6th Street - Gene Friend Recreation Center Future Expansion
Background

In November 2024, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department acquired a parcel at 240 6th Street, in the heart of SoMa. Located directly adjacent to the Gene Friend Recreation Center , this acquisition presents a rare opportunity to expand an existing facility in one of San Francisco’s most urban and historically underserved communities.
The property is currently a two-story commercial building with an auto repair shop under lease. While no development is planned in the immediate future, the site offers long-term potential to complement the newly renovated Gene Friend Recreation Center, which is currently undergoing a major transformation. The new Recreation Center is anticipated to open to the public in 2026.
Located near Victoria Manalo Draves Park and several other public spaces, the site is within an Environmental Justice Community with children, seniors, communities of color, and people living with disabilities: groups that benefit significantly from safe, inclusive, and accessible open space.
Though specific development plans are not yet in place, once funding is identified, the building will be demolished, and the site will be integrated into the Gene Friend Recreation Center to expand its outdoor open space. A community engagement process will guide the design to reflect local priorities and meet neighborhood needs.
This acquisition is a long-term investment in equity, wellness, and open space access in SoMa. We look forward to collaborating with the community to create a space that supports health, connection, and a stronger neighborhood for all.
